MOVE-IN & UNPACKING

Unpack Smart, Settle Fast

June 14, 2026

Most people unpack based on urgency, whatever feels most pressing gets done first. But the order in which you set up a new home affects how quickly it feels settled, and how organized it stays long-term. Here is the sequence that professional organizers recommend and why it works.

PRIORITY 1

The Kitchen

The kitchen is the engine of your household. Breakfast, lunch prep, your evening wind-down, it all happens here. If the kitchen is not functional, every single day starts and ends with friction.

Set up on day one:

Leave for later:

Quick tip:
Before placing anything in a cabinet, stand in the kitchen for 5 minutes and trace your cooking flow. Where do you start? Where do you end? Items should travel with you, not across the kitchen and back.

PRIORITY 2

The Bathroom

Your bathroom controls the first 20 minutes of every morning. An unorganized bathroom creates micro-friction before your day even starts, hunting for toothpaste, unclear where towels go, products scattered everywhere.

Set up on day one:

Leave for later:

Quick tip:
Set up the bathroom the way you actually use it, not the way it looks in a home magazine. If you dry your hair in the bedroom, the hairdryer belongs in the bedroom.

PRIORITY 3

The Bedroom

Sleep quality directly affects your ability to unpack and organize well. The bedroom does not need to be fully organized on day one, it just needs to be functional enough for genuine rest.

Set up on day one:

Leave for later:

Quick tip:
Resist the urge to organize your entire wardrobe on day one. A functional "for now" wardrobe, hang what you will wear this week, fold what you will not buys you time to do it properly without the pressure of everything else.

PRIORITY 4

Children's Rooms

Children feel unsettled after a move, familiar routines help them adjust faster. Their room does not need to be decorated, but it needs to function: a bed, findable clothes, and their most-loved items within reach.

Set up on day one:

Leave for later:

Quick tip:
Involve children in setting up their room. Even small decisions where their books go, which shelf is theirs, help them feel ownership and adjust to the new space faster.

PRIORITY 5

Storage Rooms & Secondary Spaces

Utility rooms and storage areas are important but they do not affect your daily routine in the same immediate way. They are also the spaces most likely to become permanent dump zones when moving pressure is still high.

Do not organize these spaces on moving day. Instead, create a holding area during unpacking, a clearly marked zone where all non-essential items go temporarily. Once the home feels settled, organize this space deliberately.

Quick tip:
A box you have not opened by the end of the first month is telling you something important about what you actually need in your life right now.

The order in which you set up your home sets the tone for how it feels for months, and sometimes years afterwards. Homes that settle quickly are the ones that were organized with intention from the beginning, not just cleared of boxes.

If you are planning a move and would like professional support from day one, a Spacemaker move-in setup session can take this entire process off your hands.
